Quantum-safe Over-the-Air Updates
Electronic control units in vehicles, airplanes, machines or other IoT devices contain more and more extensive and complex software with increasing digitalization. Since in most cases this software contains errors and/or is constantly being developed further in order to maximize the lifetime of the device or certain components, it is necessary for manufacturers to regularly provide new software and firmware updates.
Considering especially vehicles, they currently must visit workshops regularly for this purpose.
In order to reduce the effort and complexity, more and more manufacturers are taking advantage of wireless technologies, so-called over-the-air updates.
Challenges of an OTA security strategy
- Software is becoming a more important factor in vehicle development. A changed view on vehicle functions (Software Defined Vehicle/Car) is required
- External threats try to intercept downloads or deployments, creating new challenges and risks for vendors
- Data volume and update frequency increase -> Especially due to electric cars and autonomous driving, the number of required software updates rises rapidly
Benefits of an OTA security strategy through QuantiCor
- Can be used in IoT devices of any kind (provided sufficient storage capacity is available)
- New firmware, software and security updates can be played out quickly and comprehensively even over long distances
- New software-based, individually personalizable services (e.g. navigation maps, Car2x) can be played out faster via OTA
- Reduction of warranty costs for OEM parts
- Lower warranty/recall and workshop costs by reducing or eliminating visits to service centers or helpdesk calls for vehicles or IoT devices
- Real-time updates for more flexibility in the supply chain
- Improved vehicle security through timely key updates, security library updates and zero-day patches for vulnerabilities
- Increase satisfaction and brand loyalty of drivers and IoT device owners
- Regular updates close security gaps
- Secure ECU updates of all sizes

Provision of firmware and software updates by QuantiCor
To provide OTA updates, the car needs either a SIM card or a WLAN network. The update process is then started via the OTA Manager. A control unit equipped with a mobile phone interface acts as a distributor between the back end and the devices to be updated within the vehicle. It receives all software packages and then distributes them. In addition, the electronic control unit (gateway TCU — Telematics Control Unit) controls and coordinates the entire process.
A central component of our OTA update strategy is the quantum computer-resistant protection of the entire process, especially the data packages during transit.
By fully encrypting the transmission path and securely identifying and authorizing the vehicles and their control units, QuantiCor secures, among other things, vehicle-to-cloud communications and your deployments against unauthorized access and manipulation.
